On the 8th January I went to visit Heanor Funeral Home, somewhere I have never been before. The home has been refurbished throughout in our new pastel colour schemes and with new light coloured furniture and fittings.
I had already seen one such refurbishment in Lichfield and this one was in a building on a street corner in a heavily populated residential area. The home now looks welcoming and whilst we were there members of the public, a celebrant, members of the clergy and other community workers came and visited.
Jennifer Roome and Fiona Thompson along with lots of their colleagues welcomed everyone in and provided small organ entertainment and a sumptuous buffet !
I was privileged to meet the Mayor of Amber Valley Councillor Paul Lobley and his wife the Mayoress who cut the ribbon and released homing white doves.
Along with CEO Debbie Robinson and Chief Operating Officer Andy Peake we went on a tour of the premises led by Head of Funeral Lee Bevan. It always feels a bit strange seeing the refrigerated area where bodies are kept and supplies of coffins – but of course this is all a natural progression from life.
“In the midst of life we are in death” means that mortality is not something separate from life, it is a part of life and an integral aspect of the human condition constantly happening around us throughout our lives and comes to us all eventually.
I feel this is a wonderful, calm and restful place for the people of Heanor to come to make arrangements for their loved one's final journey. Everything is done with dignity and respect.
