We were invited to White Rose Care Home in Holmfirth to give a workshop on Healthy Eating, on a Tuesday morning.
It was obvious that in this lovely home the residents were well cared for and had healthy diets, all nutritionally based. However, the carer who invited us thought they would enjoy hearing about different fruits and tasting them.
Tanya created three stunning and colourful fruit platters and we took along a selection of other fruit, cherry tomatoes, oranges, bananas and lots and lots of extra strawberries.
Everyone was waiting in the comfortable lounge, which had patio doors onto a neat garden with many benches. First, we talked about portions, but the most important part was the tasting. We handed out paper cups full of bite sized different fruits and disposable forks. Those eating declared everything delicious, especially the English strawberries, and second helpings were often welcomed. Even the tea and coffee trolley was almost ignored in favour of the fruit!
There was a great discussion on eating the skin of a kiwi. Some like me, were unaware that you it was perfectly alright to eat.
Quite a few of the staff joined us for the workshop, helping some of the ladies and gents or sitting quietly to the side. Others from the offices popped in and out for a share also.
We really enjoyed interacting with the residents, chatting and laughing, and they constantly thanked us for an interesting and tasty morning.
Thanks to Aly, the member of staff, who invited us. I hope it’s not too long before we go again.
