We’re fast approaching the Easter festival and we’re happy (hoppy!) to share a little bit of Easter fun with you.
Easter is the most important festival in the Christian faith and for many, is a time for quiet reflection and contemplation. This year Easter Sunday falls on 20th April with the week leading up to it, Holy Week, marking significant moments in the Christian calendar.
Easter also signifies the end of Lent, which follows Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day. During the 40 day period of Lent millions of people all over the world test their self-discipline by abstaining from something they enjoy. The word Lent is believed to have originated from the shortened form of the Old English word ‘lencten’, meaning "spring season".
For many, Easter simply provides an opportunity to feast with friends and family on hot cross buns and Easter eggs, which you can find in our stores. We also have a recipe for another traditional Easter treat, Simnel Cake - Simnel Cake Recipe | Central Co-op
Why are eggs a symbol of Easter?

Eggs are seen as a symbol of new life. Traditionally hen’s eggs would be hard boiled and then decorated by hand for Easter, and this would often lead to an Easter Egg hunt for children to enjoy.
Nowadays most Easter eggs are made from chocolate and covered in decorative coloured foil. Delicious!

As it’s the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives we’ve taken the opportunity to theme this year’s Easter Colouring Competition to reflect this. You can find out more in our previous blogs on the subject.
As ever, we’ll be judging competition entries based on our favourite designs, but also on receiving the correct answers to our two competition questions.
All you need to do to be in with a chance to win a £50 Central Co-op voucher is download the attached pdf, apply your very best colouring skills, answer our questions and return it to our competitions email address by the 1st May 2025.
Enjoy.
