Support co-operation in peacebuilding

Date Published: 26/03/2025 | Blog category: Other

Earlier this year, the UK co-operative movement came together to mark the International Year of Co-operatives and honour its long and proud history of supporting peace and post-conflict rebuilding by establishing a new Fund for International Co-operative Development.

From Rwanda to Guatemala, co-operatives have long helped to rebuild communities following disasters and conflict, both by providing immediate aid and by laying the long-term foundations for peace and resilience.

Whether they are supporting women’s education or fighting food poverty, co-operatives in every sector empower their members, create sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen communities.

Recognising the power of co-operatives within our international development strategy could be key to bringing together communities and rebuilding livelihoods in post-conflict areas. That's why as part of the International Year of Co-operatives, the co-operative movement is encouraging the Government to ensure co-operatives are a core part of our international development strategy for post-conflict areas.

With the appointment of a new International Development minister and recent developments in UK aid funding, there has never been a more important time to promote the importance of international development, and the role co-operatives could and do play in post-conflict rebuilding.

Take action now: ask your MP to write to the new International Development Minister and call on the Government to recognise the power of co-operatives in building a more peaceful world.

Here's how.
