The elephants on parade!

Date Published: 12/07/2024 | Blog category: Other

March of the Elephants has officially begun.  It’s a community celebration of St Giles Hospice’s 40th anniversary and an exciting way for them to raise funds for the incredible work they do.

The art trail, in partnership with World renowned event experts Wild in Art, runs from July-September 2024 across Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield and will feature elephant sculptures decorated by local and national artists, designers and illustrators.

We’ve sponsored the event and have contributed two beautiful elephants to the sculpture trail.

Our large elephant sculpture now lives outside our Boley Park Store and was designed by Sri Lankan born artist, chef, florist and creative, Gayani Ariyaratne.  She’s brought her unique botanical style to the design and included food that elephants love to eat in the wild.

Our small elephant calf sculpture was gifted to Streethay Primary School and now lives inside our Boley Park store.  The sculpture was designed and painted by pupils at Streethay.  The school says the elephant represents Streethay’s ethos as it is a child led piece with a community focus.

The sculpture trail brings a moment of joy and fun for local communities across Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield.

What’s more, each elephant is fitted with a QR code that unlocks information about the sponsor and a little reward for visitors to enjoy.  Our incentive is linked to Our Malawi Partnership products found in all Central Co-op stores.

After the trail.

At the end of the trail in October, the elephants will be auctioned off at an event to raise valuable funds for the St Giles Charity.

About St Giles Hospice

St Giles Hospice is a registered charity that supports people in our community whose illnesses may not be curable. Their dedicated team provides individually tailored care at the hospice or in patients’ own homes. Specialist services are provided free of charge. St Giles receives some funding from the Government, but they rely heavily on donations and fundraising.
