A moment of calm in support of Samaritans.

Date Published: 11/10/2024 | Blog category: Other

Yesterday, on World Mental Health Day, we celebrated our exciting new charity partnership with Samaritans.

During the day we ran a wellbeing marketplace in the foyer of our Support Centre in Lichfield supported by Samaritans’ partnerships team, Tamworth volunteers and Central Co-op’s excellent wellbeing champions.

We provided colleagues with the opportunity to share wellbeing pledges, learn more about the vital services Samaritans provides, the people they support, and ways we can play our part in connecting communities for better mental health.

We also shared information on Central Co-op’s wellbeing policies and how colleagues can access their three paid volunteering days every year to support local community causes.

The day was fuelled with Co-op refreshments and a delicious celebratory cake!

Out in stores, our colleagues ran fundraising activity, including raffles, to mark the day and raise money.

You can still take your moment of calm this weekend

We’re encouraging Members to take a Dawn Walk for Samaritans in solidarity with those who are struggling to cope.

Plan your Dawn Walk at sunrise on any day up until Sunday 13th October.  Take pictures and share on social media and with Samaritans’ team.

Saving lives can’t wait

Saving Lives Can’t Wait
#SavingLivesCantWait - the time for action is now

We’re focussed on prevention, so we’re also asking Members and colleagues to support Samaritans’ current campaign for change.

Right now, suicide rates in England are just as high as they were 20 years ago – this needs to change.  We’re losing lives that Government action could help to save.

We are calling on the government in England to:

  1. Aim to achieve the lowest national suicide rate ever recorded, through strong, decisive action.
  2. Make sure every Government department takes responsibility for the impact they may have on suicide risk.
  3. Provide proper funding for all local and national suicide prevention activity.
  4. Address the impact of economic inequality in suicide.
  5. Work closely together with local government.
